On Sunday, May 21, State Rep. Andy Vargas of Haverhill delivered the Commencement Speech for Boston University's Department of Political Science. Vargas, an alumnus of the program, graduated in 2015. Vargas drew applause when he told graduates about his becoming Haverhill's first Latino elected official when he was elected to the City Council. He also told graduates that in politics, most municipal elections are ripe for a new kind of candidate, people who understand digital technology and can also knock on doors.
